Aim
Maximise the intake of information and miminise the time invested in low-quality sources.
Process
Make two passes through the book:
- Read the book, marking all the passages containing valuable information.
- Do this swiftly, without actually rushing.
- Go back through the marked sections, and digest them thoroughly. Use whatever methods seem most suitable:
- Zettelkasten
- mind-maps
- bullet-points
4 types of text sections
- Useful and difficult to understand.
- Useful and easy to understand.
- Not useful, but hard to understand.
- Not useful, and easy to understand.
Type 3 are unprofitable time-sucks. Use them to sharpen your ability to identify the usefulness of whatever you're reading.
Processing notes
- Go back to primary sources, where feasible.
- Refer back to existing Zettels and other references, seeking out deeper connections and patterns.
- Come up with your own mental models and interpretations.
